Civil Defense Monitoring Situation

Civil Defence is carefully monitoring the situation after a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit the Kermadec Islands region near New Zealand.

The quake struck at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) at 2:27am local time (12:27am AEDT). It was centered about 178 kilometers (110 miles) northeast of Gisborne and near the Kermadec Islands.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported the quake as a 7.1 magnitude, but later revised it to 7.3.

Civil Defence has advised that there is currently no tsunami threat to New Zealand, but they are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
